Questions and Answers

How do I get to the next level?

Q) Obviously agreeing with the investment advisor Mr. Gecko that greed is good, I worry that, as a small investor, corporations will try to buy my holdings from under my nose, if you know what I mean? How can I share in the rich pickings from my lowly position? I have ethical principles which some say get in the way.

A) So do I but in my business dealing with people Iam seeing that because of my good, honest principles my income is soaring and I've been able to invest more than I have in the past and that's saying a lot. People are looking towards those who are honest and have their best interests at heart.

Can a REIT be managed by a Registered Investment Advisor firm?

Q) Should I be charged a quarterly fee by an investment advisor if a REIT is a non-manageable item? The REIT will be part of my overall advisory account with the RIA. There will be a fee charged quarterly against the balance of amount invested in the REIT.. as well as all the other holdings.

A) Are you sure the REIT itself is being managed by this investment advisor? Or is the REIT part of, or the entire investment of, your investment portfolio which is what is being managed?

Any registered investment advisor firms (RIA) that hire professionals to operate independently?

Q) I am a former series 7 registered financial advisor (10 years ago in my former life in NYC). I am now living in South Florida and am interested in running more of a financial planning business (fee only). I have recently obtained my series 65 license. Are there any firms out there that specialize in helping someone like myself get up and running? Ideally, I would like a firm that is an RIA that hires and supports independent advisors to create and maintain relationships and build their own business.

If I want to become a registered Investment Advisor?

Q) I know I need a series 65. Classes...then tests then what???? I realise this is only to give advice Vs selling any security. Does this fall under the NASD or the SEC direct (series 65)

A) Best advice is to take the 66, which is a combination of the 63 and 65 I had to take. Falls under NASD. 63 is the Uniform Securities Agent State. law exam and the 65 is the investment advisor test. You first have to have your series 7 and have a sponsoring firm in order to take these exams. Good luck. However, you can take them as a single test, so the 65 only is an option, but might as well hit the 66.

Advice please. Should I become a Registered Investment Advisor?

Q) I have approximately 25 years in the brokerage business but the last twelve were as a Branch Mangager for a discount broker where I could not give advice. I have developed an effective strategy for writing covered calls and would like to market it along with giving other types of advice about managing money. I am debt free with a modest net worth but no large clientele. Is the market flooded with advice and since the internet is so ubiquitous , is there any need for people to give financial advice for a fee?

A) I'm an RIA. I think reality is somewhere between the two extremes. There's still a need for paid advisors, but the free advice has given rise to a large number of people who now can handle their own decisions. My other question has to do with your strategy, and whether it is something that you can sell to clients. It might be successful, but if your prospective client doesn't understand it, and it appears at all risky, you may have a hard time attracting clients to your business. You also need to think seriously about your pricing, and of course, the regulatory issues. Do you plan to go off on your own, or affiliate with a firm? In the end, this decision is very complex. I'm sure you've thought some of these questions through, but I'd suggest putting together a business plan for your new idea, and see if your projections come out positive or negative. Best of luck to you.

how do I become a SEC Registered Investment Advisor?

Q) I have a bachelors degree in finance and would like to do this independently as opposed to working at a firm. Can someone guide me through the process please? Also need inforrmation on the steps to be able to provide insurance. thanks in advance

A) For the Sec: You need to sit for the SERIES 7 test, and you will need a brokerage firm to represent you. For insurance, the State insurance commission requires that you pass a test, I am not certain that you need a company to represent you. I think not, you can work for several companies at the same time. The tests, both, of them are about LAWS. Your back ground in finance will help you understand what effect the law has on a transaction. YOU WILL HAVE TO STUDY TO KNOW THE right applications of the Laws.
